Bayer Failed to Give Adequate Yaz Blood Clot Warning to Consumers
As recently as 2009, the drug company Bayer was called out by the FDA for problems with their highly-lucrative oral contraceptive Yaz. The nature of the critique in each of the three FDA Safety Warning Letters the company has received for Yaz has related to how the product was marketed to women. On the one hand, Bayer was called out for making false claims about Yaz. In two particular television commercials, women actresses insinuated that the drug was far superior to other birth control pills because it helped mitigate symptoms of PMS and reduced acne. Both of these claims, it turns out, are exaggerations of what the drug has actually been approved to treat. On the other hand, Bayer was issued a Yaz Blood Clot Warning from the FDA, stating that the drug company did not make the risk of developing blood clots clear enough in their advertising. Women who have taken the oral contraceptive pill Yaz and experienced health problems related to excessive blood clots are suing Bayer for damages based on the assertion that the company was aware of the drug’s risks but did not amply warn consumers.
